Development Of Silk in The Qin And Han Dynasties

The Qin and Han dynasties were a period of initial consolidation and development of Chinese feudal society. The unification of the Qin and the establishment of a centralized power system laid the foundation for the prosperity of the Han dynasty. In the early Han Dynasty, the policy of "cultivating with the people" was implemented, which promoted the rapid economic development. A large-scale government-run silk industry was established, and its products mainly met the needs of the court and the government; the private silk weaving industry also had a great development, and some workshops formed their own product characteristics and popularity. The silk-producing area has developed compared with the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The focus of silk production in the Western Han Dynasty was in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. Since the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Shu brocade in the southwest has become a nationally renowned silk product.

During the Qin and Han dynasties, not only did the silk weaving industry get great development, but with the large-scale expansion of China's foreign influence in the Han Dynasty, silk trade and export reached unprecedented prosperity. During Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, he attacked the Xiongnu in the north and controlled the Hexi Corridor leading to the Western Regions. Zhang Qian made two missions to the Western Regions, connecting the inland of the Central Plains to the Western Regions and connecting the Eurasian continent. The promotion of trade led to the further development of economic and cultural exchanges between the Central Plains and the border areas, China and its neighbors in the east and west, thus forming the famous "Silk Road". This road starts from Chang'an, goes through Gansu and Xinjiang all the way west, passes through Central Asia and West Asia, and finally reaches Europe. In the third year of Yuanshuo (126 years ago), under the westward policy of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Chinese silk and silk were continuously exported to Central Asia, West Asia and Europe through the Silk Road. A large amount of Han silk was unearthed along the Silk Road. The fabric was the physical evidence of the prosperity of the trade at that time. China's silk production technology also spread to Central Asia during this period.
